image Lifeway Christian stores pulled the magazine, “Gospel Today” as the magazine does not fit with the Southern Baptists Convention on the role of women in the church. The feature was on five female pastors and documented their stories and struggles as life as a female pastor.

Of course the bible is clear on the instructions to women:

“Woman should be silent during the church meetings. They are not to take part in the discussion, for they are subordinate to men as the Scriptures also declare. If they have any questions to ask, let them ask their husbands at home, for it is improper for women to express their opinions in church meetings.” – 1 Corinthians 14:34-35, Living Bible

I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve.And Adam was not the one deceived it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 1 Timothy 2:12-14

- The Apostle Paul, the leader of the early church

People need to read the bible in context before taking it out of context. Women were not educated back then and back in THOSE DAYS the would use their new freedom from Christ to speak up and it caused alot of problems. Remember the church was young and still evolving then. The couldn’t teach because they didn’t know much so paul told them to learn in silence. If they couldn’t talk they couldn’t pray, sing, prophecy, speak in tongues, or anything. Think about it.

Ah-ha! The “out of context” excuse.

So then, by what evidence or authority do you declare parts of the bible in and out of context and why?

As you correctly state; the Moral Zeitgeist has moved on in the last 2,000 years and you are using modern standards to redefine the bible rather than taking the bible literally. I assume you apply the same reasoning across the bible or do you pick and choose?

    I wonder. Think about it!

    Er…

    With ALL DUE respect…

Stephen, the Bible is written around 2000-1800 years ago right? And we should take this in context? What context? The context of not having AIDS and STDS? Womens rights? Air travel? Contraception? I could go on…

I would not pick up a copy of the The Odyssey and think that a trojan horse would be a good way to attack a modern town…

Times change, and move on. Scripture, unfortunately, doesn’t.

    Peace

    Dave

All I know is that I’m not 100% sure if women should be pastors but I know this for a fact. Women were instructed to keep silent in Church by Paul in the early days because of their lack of education since men typically were the only ones that usaully got educated. They would interupt and ask questions causing confusion. That is why Paul said to keep quit during Church but ask your husband or leader afterwards. I think alot of traditions in the Church we have today are Good and Biblical but not all tradition was from God some was man made….. :] Therefore we need to not Act like we know it all and Look down on those who have opposing views. Since the Very Apostle who said to keep quit in Church also stated that we need to VIEW others as better then ourselves. He said this in order for us to be Humble….
