ABC News: There are no atheists in foxholes

An atheist solider is fighting back against the institutionalised enforced Christian religious practices of the US Army, or “God’s Army: The New Crusaders” as it appears to be becoming known in the middle east. Not only is the persecution of the non-religious in the US armed forces completely out of step with the country’s constitution and modern morality, but it doesn’t help the men and women in Afghanistan and Iraq who are being fought back against as religious crusaders by the Islamic fighters fighting to (their words), “free the Muslim holy lands” from the “kuffar”. (Needless to say if the US Army had more Muslim recruits and less of a Christian crusader approach then their enemies psychological position would be diluted).
The British Army does not appear to have these issues. Of course army chaplains travel with military units, and I presume they preside of funerals of fallen soldiers, however Army Specialist Jeremy Hall claims to have been denied a promotion and sent back from Iraq after attempts to organise a get-together of atheist soldiers; he’s now suing the department of defence for his victimisation and discrimination and plans to leave the army within a year.
CNN: Atheist Intolerance

CNN’s Delia Gallagher talks with atheists who say society has no tolerance for nonbelievers. It’s unfortunate that sections of America that have serious problems with militant Christianity and religion; I don’t ever recall seeing a news article like this in any European news.
